The Horror Connection

Tarot

Tarot is a 2024 horror movie that gives me mixed feelings. On one hand, the effects and kills are good for a PG-13 movie. The monsters based off of the cards are suitably creepy looking and the kills push the boundry of it’s rating, however there feels like something was missing.

This was a very by the numbers movie. You had your diverse group of college friends using an ancient deck of Tarot cards to tell their future. Each death corrisponds with the reading. It was predictable and that made it disappointing.

The characters were rushed, and the actor who plays Paxton, Jacob Batalon, plays the exact same type of character he plays in every movie. It’s like he’s been type casted as the lovable, nerdy friend since he was in the Sony Spider-Man Homecoming trilogy.

The way the movie ended also left much to be desired. It felt disjointed. Paxton, Haley, and Grant all survive and the spirit that cursed the cards gets a happy ending. I hated it. Yes, I’m good with her cursing all the people involved in her daughters murder, but what about all the innocent people killed after by the curse. They didn’t deserve that and she didn’t deserve to walk away happy with the spirit of her daughter.

I give this movie a 4 out of 10 for its predictable nature and somewhat happy ending.
